The Power of Our Habits

In order to be successful in any area of our lives we have to have the right habits in place to get us there. We all have habits, whether we realize it or not. Some of these habits are conscious and intentional, while others are unconscious and automatic. Some of them are healthy habits and some of them are bad habits. However, regardless of how we formed them, habits have the power to shape our lives in profound ways.

I got the honor of being able to be part of a live webinar with the one and only James Clear the author of the New York’s Best Seller Atomic Habits. I already knew the power of habits but after listening to him it really rang true.

Here are a few of the biggest take aways that I gained from this conversation. 

  1. Excellence is not about radical changes, but about accruing small improvements overtime. 
  2. If you are struggling to change the problem isn’t you it’s your systems. 
  3. True behavior change is identity change. Once you start to take pride in it, it starts to be part of who you are. 

Habits are powerful because

Habits are powerful because they are automatic and require little to no conscious effort. This means that once a habit is formed, it can continue to shape your behavior even when you are not consciously thinking about it. This makes habits a powerful tool for self-improvement, as they can be used to establish healthy and productive routines in your life.

Benefits of habits

One of the key benefits of developing positive habits is that they can lead to long-term change. When you establish a habit, you are not just changing your behavior for a moment, but you are creating a new pattern of behavior that will continue to influence you even after the initial motivation for change has faded. This makes habits a sustainable and effective tool for personal growth and development.

Negative Habits

Of course, not all habits are positive. Some habits can be destructive and have negative impacts on your life. In these cases, it can be helpful to identify the triggers that lead to these habits, and to find alternative behaviors that can help you break the bad habits.
